HFC is an Australian NGO working to transform the lives of vulnerable children, young people and their communities in developing countries. Our main programs are in Ethiopia.  We have over 50 staff in Ethiopia and a handful of dedicated staff and volunteers in Australia.


Our main programs include the School of St Yared to provide a world-class education to poor children, a sponsorship program for children and young people; and livelihood programs with local communities.

We have a vacancy for the role of Country Representative based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  


The role is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact. As head of HFC's operations in Ethiopia, the role involves overall responsibility for HFC's activities and staff in Ethiopia, including:


* Management of all in-country programs;

* Strategic planning and finance oversight;

* Compliance and government relations;

* Communications, donor relations and fundraising in-country

* Monitoring and evaluation; and

* Communications with the Australian based Board and Australian office.


What does the role require?


1.- TEAM LEADERSHIP SKILLS – ability to motivate, promote good team relationships, earn the respect of the team, provide professional mentoring.

2.- ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS capable of running an orderly office/systems, and an eye for the detail required in managing the organisations licencing/authorisations etc.

3.- INITIATIVE and ability to ‘think outside the box’

4.- PASSION FOR THE PROJECT and able to communicate this to potential partners.

5.- COMMUNICATION SKILLS – relating not only to outside partners, but also to the leaders of the community in which the project operates.  Outside partners generally do not understand Amharic so a good command of English as the common language in Africa is essential (International NGOs)



The role is full-time, based in Addis Ababa with some travel when required.  An attractive package is available for the right candidate.  


  • A Master’s Degree in development or related advanced degree relevant to the field of community development alternatively Degree in Business Administration or Project Management required

  • Minimum of 10 years senior level managerial, programmatic, and technical experience

  • Experience in working in Africa desirable

  • At least 5-10 years’ experience in the NGO sector or experience with management of donor programs
